Although 4 in 10 Californians are Hispanic, most churches are unaware of the unique 500 year history of Christianity in Latin America and the United States. With an eye towards rethinking the future of the church, this webinar explores the history and identity of the “Brown Church.”
Like Moses and the Israelites, Latinas/os have journeyed with God for five centuries in response to challenges such as Spanish colonialism, Latin American dictatorships, US imperialism in Central America, the oppression of farmworkers, or the current exploitation of undocumented immigrants.
Join us on Thursday, October 21 at 12pm for a discussion with Robert Chao Romero as he considers how this movement has responded to these and other injustices throughout its history by appealing to the belief that God’s vision for redemption includes not only heavenly promises, but also the transformation of every aspect of our lives and the world. Walking through this history of activism and faith, participants will discover that Latina/o Christians have a heart after God’s own.
About Robert Chao Romero
Robert Chao Romero is an associate professor in the UCLA departments of Chicana/o Studies and Central America Studies, and Asian American Studies. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in Latin American History and his Juris Doctor from U.C. Berkeley and is also an attorney. Romero is the author of several books, including The Chinese in Mexico, 1882-1940 and Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity. The Chinese in Mexico received the Latina/o Studies book award from the Latin American Studies Association and Brown Church received the InterVarsity Press Readers’ Choice Award for best academic title. Romero is also an ordained minister and faith rooted community organizer.
