What's Buzzy Doing These Days?
July 14, 2009

Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you know, I have embarked on a great journey of moving faith and personal conviction. My family and I sold our home in Orange, California in March 2007 and are now living in a fifth wheel trailer. My wife and I both left our jobs and sold most everything we owned. Our plan is to take two years to tour the United States.

My primary job will be performing as a stand-up comedian. I have been performing for years in a number of different ways, but I have always been drawn to stand-up. About two years ago, I made a choice to pursue this career and make it my mission field. Comedy clubs can be very dark places and I am excited to go in and offer my best to tackle that community with love and humor. It is consistently interesting as I walk into random clubs and bars, stand up in front of complete strangers, and just go for it.

I have been able to perform in a number of clubs already and have met truly amazing and talented individuals. I am beginning to see how God is working in and through me, tuning my gifts and my awareness. I have always felt like I love just about everyone, and the world of comedy is full of extraordinary people whom I can invest in, care about, and learn from. This feels like exactly where God wants me to be right now.

I also am spending time writing sermons and stories, and preaching for churches and camps. One of the projects I am most excited about is an event called "Comedy for a Cause." This is an event that I have been able to have at a number of churches. It is a night of clean comedy with professional comedians wherein the proceeds go to an overseas missions project. I am currently working closely with Empowering Lives International to produce a number of Comedy for a Cause events throughout the country. The Comedy for a Cause goal in 2008 is to raise $100,000 for Africa. I am beginning to work with other groups to produce comedy events for the cause that they are trying to support. Consistently interesting.

While we have only been on the road for 6 months, my family and I are beginning to hear from God. It is an awesome journey. Support and success are coming from many different places. We are so grateful for the kindness and help of those we are meeting along the way, new friends, new churches, new neighbors, new teachers. Our family is energized and seeking, pushing forward, asking for more, listening to the call.

We are grateful for our continued connection to the FMCSC even while we are on the road. ?It?s Good to Belong? took on a whole new meaning as we were heading over the mountain pass in Northern Idaho. We heard a loud pop and lost power in our truck (the one pulling our house). We pulled to a small shoulder of the two-lane road we were on and felt defeated. I got out and popped open the hood, as if I would be able to do anything. It was our turbo. We had lost it and we were about 100 miles from anything. We drifted into Montana at speeds sometimes as slow as 10 miles per hour. It took about two hours to go thirty miles and it just about broke our spirits. We needed to get our truck to a shop, but we had our house attached to it. I was able to find a Free Methodist church in Missoula. I called the pastor and told him I was part of the FMCSC and asked if I could leave my trailer in his church parking lot for a few nights until I got my truck fixed. He said they had no parking lot, and then offered to let me leave it in his back yard as long as needed. What a kind family. It?s Good to Belong.

We are about to head back down the coast to be home for the holidays. I will be doing as many shows as possible while I am home and continuing to invest in that small sliver of creatives that I am beginning to call family. Thanks to all of you that have supported my family and our best attempt at life and service. We will see you guys when we get back. We love you all.
