FM Room Dedication at APU
June 22, 2009
Thursday, September 28, 2006 saw the dedication of the "FM Room," a conference and class room at Azusa Pacific University that has been set aside to tell the history of the Free Methodist denomination.
Approximately 75 Free Methodist and Azusa Pacific University leaders, board members, faculty and staff were present.
APU president, John Wallace was present to welcome attendees and give an address. Superintendent Steve Fitch gave a public word of gratitude and spoke of "a place where we could tell our story" and "cast our vision.."
Dr. Karen Winslow, Director of the Free Methodist Center and an HST Associate Professor, introduced and thanked all dignataries present. Dr. Winslow, in partnership with Steve Fitch and the FMCSC Conference office, saw the final stages of the art depicted in the FM Room through to completion.
The art and story of the Free Methodist room has also become more than vision and more than history telling. Steve Fitch noted that, in recognizing the shared ministry of Azusa Pacific University and the Free Methodist Church, there is healing.
Azusa Pacific University was birthed when an FM school faced closure. This led to a merger of Azusa College and Los Angeles Pacific College (becoming: Azusa Pacific College and later: Azusa Pacific University). Where there was once grief in considering the loss of a place of education, now there can be a sense of blessing: God heals; God redeems.
It is our further hope that the art and words that are on display there may be used as an educational tool for local churches. We have provided reproductions available for pastors and churches to download, with the intention of them being used as instructional aids and even for display for congregants to see.
If you would like to see the art pieces in person, contact Carmeli Silva at the Haggard School of Theology to schedule an appointment.
