Psalm 23 and the fires in CA
August 26, 2009
Denny writes:
"It is no coincidence that during the Tea Fire, Rosie and Mike Conaway found this piece of charred paper that had been blown by the wind the seven miles from the Riviera [where the TEA fire was] to the Mesa [a region of Santa Barbara City]. As you can see it is a page from a bible commentary, and it just happens to be talking about the 23rd Psalm: “The Lord [Yahweh] is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” And on the back side the writer says “’The Lord is my shepherd.’ The soul feels surrounded and protected by the Love of the Lord, placing complete reliance in him. Here the ‘shepherd’ could also be a reference to a Master – it depends who wrote the psalm – for a Master gives his spiritual protection to a loving disciple…keeping him cocooned in his atmosphere of love, watching over him with a diligent eye, though the disciple may be unaware of it.”
Miraculous message to us today – yes. But it is the same message that God has been communicating miraculously and simply for thousands of years.
In times of disaster and tragedy, it is easy for us to feel abandoned - alone in the world. Yet the message of Ezekiel [Denny's sermon this Sunday; Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24] is the same as this miraculous piece of burned scripture that floated into our lives: God cares for us. We are sheep in His pasture.
