"In" is the new "Out"
June 15, 2009
About four months ago I joined up with a ministry in Azusa named “Revolution.” Revolution has a unique slant that has held my interest longer then any of my former elementary school teachers ever could, and that is even counting the puppets they used to try and teach me math!
Revolution is a church that has one formal service a month. This service is a combination of scripture, teaching, artists performing, people engaging in discussion, top notch music, worship in a variety of forms and always comes with a charge for people to get up and do something as a result of their faith in Christ.
Aside from the monthly service, there are a gaggle of House Churches that meet on a weekly basis all over Southern California. They meet and discuss how to apply the message presented in the monthly service. They hold each other accountable to that application and encourage each other to continue progressing as Children of the Great Creator.
I love all of these elements of Revolution, but they are not the primary reason for my zeal. It all comes down to a simple phrase called BIBLE ACTION. Bible Action is the charge for every House Church to be contributing to their community. Most churches make a solid effort to reach their communities with what they call “outreach”, but in reality almost all outreaches are really inreaches. We ask our communities to come IN to our building for a concert; we ask them to come IN for a men’s breakfast or a women’s tea; we ask them to come IN for the super terrific comedy hour hosted by the youth group on a Friday night. All of these things are good, but they are not OUTreach, they are INreach. I am the guiltiest of all for calling my past INreaches, OUTreaches, but Revolution has a true charge to all of the house churches and their members to do OUTreach in their community, to contribute to something other then just their church or church events.
Revolution has House Churches sponsoring little league teams; on the streets doing homeless ministry; going to women’s shelters and loving the down and out. We have House Churches raising money for ministries in Africa. We have house churches truly investing in OUTreach, reaching out of our bubble and contributing, reaching OUT of ourselves and participating, reaching OUT of our group of easy friends and loving those around us.
We are still growing as a church. We are still learning how to balance the application of what we already know and the desire to learn more without just being sponges that want to soak it all up without ever letting it change our values.
We are having fun as we seek God’s unique call for us to participate in this world and make a dent for His sake.
